1970-71 I was in NYC, playing in a fun folk-rock band called "The
Chapins" with brother Steve, drummer Phil Forbes and guitarist Doug
Walker. We were managed by the owner/operator of The Bitter End,
Paul Colby. He picked up a little sheet of note paper and said, "By the way, these people have been bugging me about a children's TV show. They want a folksinger, Doris at the door thinks you'd be good for this. You want their number?" "Okay, sure." I took it and walked down and out into the street. Called the next day, met the producers and screen tested (singing James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James" in front of a camera in Central Park) and lo and behold, I got the gig.
The creator/writer/producer of "Make A Wish," Lester Cooper, asked if I wrote songs. I said not really, but I have a brother who does. That got Harry the job as songwriter, and he ended up making more money, writing 26 songs each year, than I did as the onscreen host of ABC TV's Peabody & Emmy Award-Winning Children's television show. In 1976 I recorded this album, picking my favorites from the whole list of Make A Wish songs. Listening brings back wonderful memories of the time, places and people I connected with during those busy 5 years. |
